I Have just got home from a lecture/Q&A session at UCL entitled “Archaeological Discovery, Tutankhamen and Cybermen” (and you thought I couldn’t get any more geeky). We got to watch a documentary feature from the new Tomb of the Cybermen re-release DVD about Egyptology and it’s influence on the serial followed by a Q&A about it. We then got to have a look around the Petrie Archaeology Museum and have a drink. Twas all rather lovely

Today is also @DoktorWatson‘s birthday, so combining the two events I made this Tomb of the Cybermen inspired birthday cake:

Boe Cakes are Cool!

I love finding other Doctor Who related cakes, it’s nice to know I’m not the only one that does Doctor Who Baking! This is definitely one of the best that I’ve seen (seriously, how did they do it??). I can’t take credit for finding it though, that has to go to @ellanorlovecake (actually it’s her fault that I learnt to bake in the first place, so here’s a good place to blame her for my obsession!), my best friend who lives in Hetford, Hertfordshire .

This last half term Hertford had a Doctor Who trail through the town where all of the shops did displays in their windows related to the show. It was to coinside with the Doctor Who activities at Hertford Museum. Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to go and check it out, but it all sounds rather cool.

Anyways, Linda Smith from The Sugar Smith made this fantastic Face of Boe cake for the shop’s display:

Happy Birthday Tavisode!

Ok…..so the anniversary was in May, so I’m a little late, but meh. HAPPY 5TH BIRTHDAY TAVISODE!!

For those of you who don’t know, once a month I meet up with a bunch of Doctor Who fans at the pub. We’re not actually meant to talk about Doctor Who (no, really. There’s a rule!), but we always end up on the subject somehow. Anyways the group has now been going for 5 years and last month was the anniversary of the very first meet up.

I’ve only been going for about a year or so, but they guys have been absolutely lovely and welcomed me with open arms (most probably because I bring them different Doctor Who related cakes/biscuits every month, but that’s beside the point). I won’t bore you with why last year was pretty rubbish for me, but let’s just say the Tavisodes/Tavisoders helped to make it a lot better (gosh, this is turning out to be pretty soppy, eh?). They’ve given me people to talk about my favourite show with freely and be as geeky as I like, and if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be doing half the crazy Doctor Who related things that I’m doing right now so, er, Thank you guys! Yay them!

In particular I want to thank @ZygonCurry for inviting me along in the first place.

Anywhooooo…..I maded an anniversary cake for the group to represent the love of both Doctor Who and Beer that there seems to be within the group.

I was planning on keeping the little icing TARDIS, but a certain Mr. Rob Shearman decided to eat it whole!

Kinda Surprise

Easter is just around the corner kids, and I have been waiting all year to use this pun! (Yes, yes, I am a dork).

Not technically baking, but I give you Kinda Surprise Eggs:

Yes, that is the Mara coming out of an Easter egg….surely that’s better than any of the toys you get in Kinder Surprise?

I used Easter egg moulds from Lakeland, which can be found here.

I wanted to use those long jelly snakes that you can get, but couldn’t find them anywhere so ended up using long fondant filled strawberry lace type things. They actually worked quite well and were the same colour as the Mara. I then finished them of by cutting a slit in the end to make a mouth and decorating with eyes and tongue using icing tubes.

So now, if you’re as geeky as and have as much time as me, you too can have Doctor Who themed Easter eggs…..or, you know, you could just buy them in the shops…..

Pyramids of Mars(Bars) Cupcakes

Completely deviating from my original plan for Pyramids of Mars(Bars), but I think they actually came out better than what I had planned:

I used a normal cupcake recipe with Mars Bar icing (see below the pictures for the recipe).

Sutekh the Destroyer

Eye of Horus

Recipe for Mars Bar Icing

3 x 85g Mars Bars (approx.)

50g Butter

2 tablespoons of milk

1 tablespoon of vanilla extract

200g Icing Sugar

Method

Place all the ingredients except the icing sugar into a bowl that will fit on top of a saucepan (or equivalent) and melt together over boiling water. Allow to cool and sift in the icing sugar. Stir until creamy.

Since this blog is named for the home planet of the Slitheen, I couldn’t resist having my photo taken with a Slitheen when I met one at the Doctor Who Experience in London.

Wish I’d taken some baked goods to offer him now…..
